ThanatoSchizO
Zoom Code
CD, My Kingdom Music, 2008

Taking this CD out of the envelope, I saw the artwork and instantaneously decided to pass it on to one of my colleague reviewers. The promosheet, however, claimed ThanatoSchizO (TSO) to be progressive death metal. My curiosity was awakened and here I am, reviewing "Zoom Code" after all.
This Portuguese six-piece celebrates its tenth anniversary with their fourth album. It's quite obvious that TSO is a machine well-oiled with experience: any 'objective' standards such as execution and production are perfectly met. And just like any serious band, they continue in similar fashion towards other areas. The songwriting shows the band at its best, with easy-going tracks that still prove challenging in their details and variety. The use of samples and keyboards aid the progressive intentions a great deal, and this edge of unexpectedness is what keeps the tracks entertaining. The female-male vocals work extremely well together, and even though I'm more a fan of brutal metal, the progressive atmosphere and catchy tunes effortlessly keep me spellbound.
According to themselves, fans of Ayreon, Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation and Amorphis will dig this. According to me, more than just those people will.
