Zoom Code
CD, My Kingdom Music, 2008

Thanatoschizo is a metal group from Portugal founded in late 1997. Delivering a sound between progressive death metal, doom metal, progressive rock, atmospheric and electronic music, free-jazz, Middle Eastern music plus a close connection near enough to modern gothic metal, "Zoom Code" gets really hard to be categorized. The album was produced by Luís Barros (Tarantula), mastered by Tommy Newton (Conception, Helloween) and features guest appearances by Timb Harris (Estradasphere, Secret Chiefs 3) and Zweizz (Fleurety, ex-Dødheimsgard). If we try to parallel their music there are lots of influences here from Amorphis to Gathering and Lacuna Coil to even Evanessence. The singing is divided between male vocals both clean and growling and female by Patricia Rodriguez who tries most of the time to approach the levels of Anneke van Giersbergen but there is absolutely no comparison.
What I really liked in this album is the guitar section and in particular in the track "L." where the eastern influences and the driving rhythm really makes it for me the best track from an album that other than it didn’t have anything else to say to me.
Finally I must note that I cannot understand anymore this recent phenomenon with the necessary female vocals. Give us a break at last with this trend. The whole thing does not constitute originality anymore but a suspicious, repeated fact. And now you will reply, well aren’t you ashamed, a woman yourself and to say such things! Well, a female flowerpot with a common and simply beautiful voice is not and the most spectacular thing, don’t get too excited.
And now because I must also rate this, those guys surely aren’t any extraneous musicians. On the contrary there are moments in the album demonstrating that the talent and the inspiration are there both in terms of songwriting and performance but this "the beauty and the beast" approach at my opinion rather buries their effort than making it interesting. In any case those who like this kind of music can check them out.
