InsomniousNightLift
(Rage Of Achilles)

4/5

A colossal dose of epic, esoteric doom from Portugal.

Click for a larger viewWith the notable exception of Moonspell, Portugal has not contributed a whole lot to the extreme metal scene, but arch mentalists ThanatoSchizO seem destined to change that. Morphing from grandiose doom to spooky, gothic death metal and featuring numerous passages of melodic fragility, this is not an album of immediate thrills, but one that demands to be explored at lenght. Joyously self-indulgent and hugely flamboyant, “InsomniousNightLift” owes much to the intricate splendour of Opeth, but also to the icier atmospheres of My Dying Bride at their oppressive best.

There are even moments when the band plunge into rockier, more straightforward territory, as on the extravagant “Of Lunar Water”. Whichever direction the band choose, the results are never less than impressive.
