For the ones who think that the Portuguese metal scene is (still) only about Moonspell, guess again. There are many talented bands coming from Portugal, and fortunately they have been projecting their music all over the world during the last few years, specially bands like Heavenwood and ThanathoSchizO. Sure, none of them are yet able to place themselves in the same league as the Black/Gothic Metal legends, but there aren't that many active bands out there who can, even if you look outside Portugal.
ThanatoSchizO's have, in fact, climbed a long way during the last couple of years. They started just in 1998 and already have made quite an impression outside Portugal due to a couple of solid releases, "Schizo Level" (2001) and "InsomniousNightLift" (2003), and now the time has come for their new one entitled "Turbulence".
The people who have been following the band for the last couple of years are probably used to a couple of changes in the style that ThanatoSchizO make. Take the previous album, for example. "InsomniousNightLift" is the name, and it's more of a Doom Metal album with some Progressive influences as well, but "Turbulence" is much more in the Progressive Death Metal style, but it's nothing new to the guys (and girl) of the band since they had explored this musical side before, they just got better at it this time.
"Turbulence" has something that I enjoy very much, which is that contrast between something melodic and something really heavy, and with superb results. For such achievement the band not only used (and abused!) of some heavy guitars and some keyboards, for more melodic enhancement, but also three types of vocals. Eduardo's great at this, he performs not only some deep and harsh growls but also some very nice clean vocals as well. But that's not it, he also has the company of Patrícia's first-rate female vocals, definitely her best work so far.
It's true that the band had some line-up changes in the past, specially during the beginning, but I really hope they remain as they are now because in terms of musicianship all the members are top-notch here.
After just a quick listening to this album and you can notice that it has some juice in it, but it takes more than that to get the most out of "Turbulence". Still, there are always tracks that immediately catch your attention, songs like "Sweet Suicidal Serenade", "Traces" and "Untiring Harbour", to name a few.
Give "Turbulence" a couple of spins on your stereo and the album will grow on you, for sure. Fine example of what Progressive Death Metal should be done, defintely worth checking out for any metal fan.
